In a wilderness survival situation you need to live by the sacred order: Shelter, Water, Fire, Food. In this article you will learn how to build a debris shelter that will keep out rain and keep in heat. Learn from the squirrels, if you look at a squirrel`s nest you will see a massive pile of leaves, it may look messy and poorly made but it keeps them warm and keeps out rain.

Find an adequate camp site. It should be on a flat or raised section of the terrain and there should be some sort of protection from weather, such as trees or large boulders. If you find a large boulder make camp on the opposite side of where the wind is coming from.

Find a support. A tree with a natural split is best but if you can not, find two sturdy Y sticks. The support should be 2-4 inches above your nose, because this will essentially act as a sleeping bag, it will trap your body heat.

Find a spine. Look for a long sturdy branch that should have about a five inch diameter. It should be around six inches longer than your feet.

Set up your spine and support. If you are using Y sticks angle them so that the split part of the Y`s make a diamond for the spine to be supported by.

Measure yourself. Lay down down under your spine and measure how wide your shoulders are. Draw a line an inch wider than your shoulders around the whole thing.

Find ribs. They should be sturdy branches with about an inch in diameter and should be 1-2 inches apart and should cover the whole structure.

Pile on leaves. This is the most important part. You need a TON of dead leaves, a good way to measure is by using your arm. You should be able to put your arm all the way up to you shoulder and have your finger tips touching the ribs.

Go inside and look for any light coming through anywhere. Patch up those holes, then you can lay down a thick bed of of leaves inside. This is to keep your body heat from escaping into the ground.

- If there are more than two people you need to build multiple shelters, two is the most you can put in a shelter and keep the shelter effective.
- Do not skimp on leaves they are the most important part!
- Try not to cut off any living branches, and if you have to find a sapling that looks like it probably will not survive, under a thick canopy were not a lot of sunlight comes through, or if it is in a group of a lot of other trees of the same type. When cutting, cut as close to the trunk as you can and when you are done thank the tree for giving you the branch.
- Make sure you put enough leaves on top, because lots of times people pile leaves on the side and then the top is completely exposed.
